Despite past indications to the contrary, Jackson District School Board member-elect Rebecca Cordani was seated with her new colleagues at the Board’s first year 2000 meeting Tuesday night. Ms. Cordani joined returning members Rosa Crocker (Wakefield) and Aileen Johnson (Piedmont), and newly elected members Rose Ann Sharp (Hampton) and Franklin Warner (Stonewall-Hawthome).
The new School Board’s first order of business was establishing its organization for the new year. The Board elected Rosa Crocker as it Chairman, Aileen Johnson as its Vice-Chairman, Assistant Superintendent Mary Ann Biggs as Clerk, Superintendent David Gangel as Deputy Clerk, Mary Ann Biggs as Superintendent’s Designee, and Ms. Johnson as the George Washington Carver/Piedmont Board Representative.
The Board also established its meeting schedule for the year, maintaining the second Tuesday of each month for regular School Board meetings.
As its final organizational task, the School Board established preliminary subcommittee memberships, with members Johnson and Warner seated on the Budget and Finance subcommittee; Crocker and Warner on the Buildings and Grounds/Facilities subcommittee; Crocker, Warner and Sharp on Policy and Legal; Crocker and Sharp on Educational Programs and Strategic Planning; Johnson and Cordani on Government Liaison and Community Relations; and Johnson and Cordani on Personnel.
State standards to be
revised
The agenda for the January School Board meeting included a discussion of Virginia Standards of Accreditation, but Superintendent Gangel, noting that these standards are undergoing review and revision by the Virginia Board of Education, deferred discussion on the subject until after the revisions are effected in March.
