Public comment
During the ‘Public Comments’ portion of the meeting, four community members spoke. Buck Payne, the President of Headwaters, welcomed the new Board and raised two issues for its consideration. Mr. Payne invited a member of the School Board to join the Headwaters board in an ex officio capacity, and the School Board decided to review this offer and select a candidate at a later time. He also requested that the School Board consider incorporating into its 2000-2001 budget the costs for the “Book Buddies” program and for transportation to summer schooltwo programs that Headwaters has supported and financed in the past.
Meredith Gorfein spoke in support of a lobbying effort by the Virginia Coalition for Public Education (VCPE) and the Rappahannock County Democratic Committee (RCDC) in opposition to tuition tax credit legislation to be introduced into Virginia General Assembly. The prospective bill would provide tuition tax credits or vouchers to parents with children in private schools or who are homeschooled, and the VCPE and RCDC contend that such credits would prove harmful to public education. RCDC is organizing a “Ride to Richmond" on Jan. 17 for those who wish to participate in this “Lobby Day.” Information is available from Meredith Gorfein at 675-3515 or by email to gorfein@citizen.infi.net.
