The widely acclaimed young jazz pianist Bill Charlap opens the new season for The Theatre at Washington with a concert on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 3 p.m.
Bom and raised in New York City, he is the son of Broadway composer Moose Charlap (“Peter Pan”) and singer Sandy Steward who worked with Benny Goodman, and he has been playing the piano for as long as he can remember.
Perhaps because of this strong musical background, The New York Times was able to say of Charlap in a jazz review last year: “Though he’s only in his early 30’s, the pianist Bill Charlap is solidly old-fashioned. It would be hard to find another young jazz musician playing at his level with such deep knowledge of the songs from American musical theater.”
Also writing last year, Whitney Balliett, in an article about Charlap in The New Yorker, said “At 32, he is the best, of a swarm of gifted pianists who have appeared in New York in the phst ten years.”
