During their presentation, the telemarketers would question the recipients of their calls, getting their names, where they bank, and even bank account numbers.
“The company itself appears to legitimate,” said Sherertz. “But what some of their employees were doing was not.”
Once the perpetrators of the scam got the names and bank account information, they created transactions in which they were the payees. They then pushed the bogus transactions through the banking system, stealing money from the accounts.
The Sheriff’s Office has been working with the Rappahannock National Bank, and is contacting the F&M Bank branch office in Flint Hill.
“There are six people in Rappahannock we know of who have been victimized,” said Sherertz. “Two of them have had money taken their accounts.”
