that the board approve an amendment to the retirement system that would permit county employees to purchase credits (years of service) in the Virginia Retirement System, enabling them to increase their retirement benefits at no cost to the county. The board approved this amendment.
• Mr. McCarthy presented a list of appointments to local boards and commissions. This list is available from the County Administrator’s office.
• Mr. McCarthy presented a letter from Culpeper County’s Director of Planning to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation which informs the state that Culpeper’s Board of Supervisors “voted to support the proposal to designate Route 522 between the Town of Culpeper and the Rappahannock County line as a Virginia Byway.”
• Mr. McCarthy also presented a letter from Washington Volunteer Fire & Rescue to a local homeowner whose property access was so poor that the squad informed them that “in the future we will not be able to service it with our ‘structure fire’ apparatus.” Mr. McCarthy noted the frustration with those who have “big expensive homes but owners build poor driveways and rescue can’t get in.”
• Electoral Board Chair, Sheila Sweet, informed the board that there will be a Republican primary on Feb. 29, 2000, but that the Electoral Board did not budget for two primaries.
If there is a Democratic primary in June, the Electoral Board will have to request additional funds.
