The underside of the leaf of the tree — often called southern magnolia or simply magnolia — is a surprising contrast to its upper surface: it is a rusty-red suede, a color caused by a dense mat of reddish hairs. These leaves, up to 8 inches long and 3 inches wide, have a leathery texture.
The bold white flowers are about 8 inches across and appear in early summer. Their fragrance is unmistakable. When the summer sun beats down on flowers of Magnolia grandiflora, the air is heavy with a pungent aroma.
Some writers refer to it as lemony. I disagree. The fragrance is like no other, as the smell of a ripe peach is unique.
