Mr. McCarthy expressed his hopes that Bell Atlantic would provide more frequent database releases, and noted that Sprint does so on a daily basis. He said that if Bell Atlantic cooperates by providing frequent database updates, then the E-911 problems can be fixed.
Mr. McCarthy also referred to the telephone companies’ lobbying efforts in Richmond for a bill that would establish state E-911 fees and that would thus eliminate local fees. He noted that the proposed fee is half of that currently collected by Rappahannock County and would reduce local E-911 funding, and that the proposed move would establish yet another state bureaucracy.
Other activities
Other activities before the board included:
• Schools’ Superintendent Dr. David Gangel reported that the schools suffered no ill effect of the Y2K bug. He also noted that the high school addition was progressing well, with walls going up and slabs to be finished that day. He thanked the board for their efforts on the athletic fields, remarking that work on the fields was “moving along well.”
