The Fauquier Community Theatre brings its production of the psychological thriller “Night Must Fall” to The Theatre at Washington for two performances, on Saturday, April 1 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 2 at 3 p.m.
Two of the best known plays by the Welsh actor and dramatist Emlyn Williams were written in the thirties: “Night Must Fall” in 1935, followed by “The Com is Green” three years later. Both plays were subsequently turned into films. “Night Must Fall” has remained a popular stage play in the decades since it was written and its revival in this production by the Fauquier Community Theatre was well received during its run in Fauquier County earlier this year.
The setting for the drama is a classic English country house, presided over by a reclusive, self centered matron, who uses her money and imaginary ailments to control those around her. Among those beholden to her is the lonely niece, forced by circumstances to live and work in this house filled with fear and tension.
The household includes the wise cracking and irreverent housekeeper, the optimistic but rather stupid maid, and the cheery nurse. The arrival on the scene of a charming and charismatic young man brings with it mystery, and eventually the entry of the detective from Scotland
