In 1859 Thomas Massie, a farmer living in Rappahannock County, organized a militia company with men living near the town of Washington, Va.
Mr. Massie lived one mile west of Washington in Harris Hollow.
The men called themselves the “Washington Greys”, Washington for the town and for George Washington; Greys to denote that they were militia, grey being the color worn by many militia units, both North and South.
