Thomas James and Elizabeth Kennerley were the first settlers in this area.
On June 6, 1735, they purchased 1,750 acres of land from Lord Fairfax. Lord Fairfax called this tract of land Delemore Forest because it reminded him of land that he owned in England.
As you leave Washington, on the Fodderstack Road, and after crossing . the Rush River, the Delemore Forest land would be on your left.
Ivy Cliffs is on the Rappahannock historic map with a date of 1739.
On January 22, 1745/6, William Coleman and his wife sold Francis Strother 518 and one third acres of land, one third of the Delemore Forest tract and including Ivy Cliffs.
In 1748, Francis Strother and his wife, Susannah (Dabney) Strother, and all except two or three of the older children moved to Ivy Cliffs. On
