Books by local authors will be featured in the Ki Theater on July 4th and will include ; Carl Coon’s “Culture Wars and the Global Village,” just released. His book is neither large nor ponderous but it is certainly scholarly.
This tome will stretch one’s vocabulary and knowledge of the world but, most of all, it , will stretch one’s thinking. In a half dozen ways well-known scholars are quoted on the jacket lauding the work and - daring the reader to try it.
Retired Ambassador Coon is an ardent humanist who evolved his theories during a long career in the Foreign Service. He writes he was influenced by his anthropolo. gist father but even more by • the people of different cultures that he met. ' By cultures he means “particular assemblages of ethnic, linguistic, religious, ethical or behavioral features” that distinguish one group from another. He proposes that the conflicts in the Balkans, the ; Middle East, Africa and many ' parts of the world can be r braced to evolution of cultures and human nature in the prehistoric past.
