The annual Wakefield Athletic Awards Banquet took place recently at Mosby’s Tavern in Middleburg. Of 170 student athletes, 30 were honored at the event for their outstanding participation in fall, winter and spring sports at the junior high, JV and varsity levels.
All 18 members of the Wakefield coaching staff selected award recipients, based on the athletes’ year long records.
For the second consecutive year, Washington resident and 11th grader Katie Updike won the girl Athlete of the Year award.
Updike was captain of the Fighting Owls Girls’ Varsity Volleyball and Basketball teams and played on the soccer team. She won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in varsity volleyball, and her teammates voted her MVP of the varsity basketball team.
She also made the First Team, All-DAC (Delaney Athletic Conference) selection, for these two sports.
