The Rappahannock Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police are seeking help from the public in identifying the owner of a car with out-of-state license plates that was seen on the grounds of Montpelier around the time of the vandalism of the historic mansion last month.
Investigators are seeking any person who may have seen or have knowledge about an early 1980s black Cadillac Eldorado “or similar type vehicle” with blue tags with yellow letters that was seen at Montpelier by a passerby at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17.
The witness described the car as having a chrome band over the roof, and opera windows in the rear pillars. Three male subjects were seen in the vehicle.
The vandalism was discovered on Saturday afternoon, May 20.
Investigators have said that the crime possibly occurred sometime earlier in that week.
“The vehicle was observed on Montpelier property at the house and seen a short time later at the bottom of Montpelier Lane coming out of the gate,” said Sheriff Larry Sherertz in an interview this week.
“If anyone has knowledge of anyone who operates a vehicle like this, we would like them to come forth,” said the Sheriff.
“We are not saying these people are the perpetrators,” Sherertz said. “ We are saying they might be helpful to our investigation.”
The person who supplied the sheriff’s office with the sighting was traveling southbound on Route 231 and saw the car up at the house. This individual forgot something, the sheriff said, and had to drive back, and saw the Cadillac coming out of the gate leaving Montpelier.
Investigators have mentioned Pennsylvania tags as possibly being the out of state tag on the Cadillac; however they also are looking at the possibility the tags could be from Delaware or New Jersey because of the similarity in colors.
