July 22, 1748, Francis Strother bought two more tracts of land from Lord Fairfax, totalling 1,333 acres that he owned.
In the will of Francis Strother in 1752, he left Ivy Cliffs to his wife and then passed on to his son, Robert. However, there must have been a family arrangement because one of Francis Strother’s youngest daughters, Elizabeth married James Gaines and they lived at Ivy Cliffs until May 1779 when they moved to North Carolina. The had 12 children.
Edmund Pendleton Gaines was bom at Ivy Cliffs on March 20, 1777. He entered the Army in 1799 and was a Major General by the War of 1812 and one of the heroes of this war. For his third wife, he married Myra Clark Gaines of New Orleans. She must have been an interesting and famous woman as two books were written about her, New Orleans Woman and The Strange Case of Myra Clark Gaines.
