Yes, ma’am, Your Honor! When Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, so history says, the bands played “The World Is Upside Down.” That occasion was nothing. Tuesday’s town election in the First Washington pointed the sign for the ladies to take over in September - a woman mayor and an all-woman council. They take office the first Thursday in September. The new mayor, Mrs. George H. Davis Jr. received 51 votes. Elected council-ladies are Mrs. C.J. Miller with 70 votes; Mrs. J.W. Price with 67 votes; Mrs. J.W. Critzer with 65 votes; Miss Ruby Jenkins with 54 votes, Miss Elizabeth Racer with 51 votes and Mrs. M.M. Hawkins with 48 votes. The parade and the Liberty Bell replica exhibition program, sponsored by the American Legion, at Washington Monday evening, was well attended by the citizens of the county. The parade, forming at the residence of L.V. Merrill, proceeded down Main Street, turning at the C.T. Bruce residence and concluded at the courthouse. Mrs. L.J. Kilby lead the assemblage in singing “America,” followed by the preamble of the Declaration of Independence recited by John Turner, dressed as Unc,le Sam. The program was concluded with the ringing of the Liberty Bell by Mary Norman Davis, dressed in patriotic colors, representing Miss Liberty.
