On Tuesday evening, Aug. 21 children who were participating in Camp Fantastic at the Northern Virginia 4H Educational Center enjoyed food and entertainment provided by restaurants, businesses, individuals, and civic clubs in and around Rappahannock County.

This was the 19th year that Camp Fantastic, a camp for children between the ages of 7 and 17 who are cancer patients at NIH, has been conducted. Camp Fantastic is sponsored by Special Love, Inc.

Along with the 100+ campers, doctors, nurses, and 4-H teen leaders who serve as camp counselors attended camp.

We work with a great group from the community to plan this event each year. This year, our committee consisted of Sandra Jenkins, Ester Settle, Jan Makela, Marie Davis, and Bruce Jones.

The committee chose a beach theme for this year’s Rappahannock Night. Volunteers put together “sand buckets” that were given to each camper and contained a fish-shaped beach ball, a fish squirter, sun visor, sunglasses, a tropical pen, a tropical fish straw, and taffy.

Charlotte Turnmeyer, Karla Miller, Robyn Kaye, and Jason Kaye were there with their ever popular face painting.

Captain Jeff Brown came with a snow cone machine and handed out snow cones throughout the evening. Howard Massey brought and kept the cotton candy machine cranking, and Don Barney provided funnel cakes for the campers.

Blues Fuze provided some “surfin’ tunes”, and had everyone dancing the night away! Sherry Hamill-Huff and assistants brought horses and offered rides throughout the evening.

Many restaurants, businesses, individuals, and civic clubs once again made donations to ensure that our “Rappahannock Night” at Camp Fantastic was successful. These included: Bleu Rock Inn, fried chicken; The Public House, Pizza Hut, Melting Pot, Mountainside Market, pizza; Muskrat Haven, corn; The Country Cafe and Jan Makela, fruit; Settle’s Grocery, butter, salt and pepper, com boats, ketchup* mustard, ice cream, and bottled water; Ester Settle and Arland Welch, macaroni and cheese; The Inn at Little Washington and Rae’s Place, quiche; Rappahannock Lions’ Club, corn dogs; Don Barney, funnel cakes; Vivian Yancey, Janet Eastham, Alice Pullen, Sandra Jenkins, and the Amiss villa Homemakers’, desserts;
