Cross Country
The cross country teams are literally, off and running. It was difficult to energize this group prior to school with coaching changes and new runners everywhere, but after a week of school, they’re off the ground and starting to take shape. A small group of mostly first-time runners participated in the Stonewall scrimmage last week with veterans, senior Phillip Thomas finishing 7th out of 110 runners for the boys and junior Elaine Smith leading the female runners for the RCHS team.
On Thursday, Aug. 30 the teams competed in a quadmeet at Page county High School — the reigning single “A” State Champions. Also participating were Strasburg, William Monroe, and Broadway High Schools. Thomas finished fifth to lead the Rapp side with a respectable 18:46 time over the wet and slippery three mile course. Smith led our female runners with a time of 26:40 and a eighth place finish among the girl runners.
Veteran coach Ann Spieker and second year coach, Mark Ramey are both pleased with the progress so far on the squad. The next big event for the young team is the Eastern Mennonite Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 10 a.m.
