With the rhythmic “chaching”
of a nearby cash register on percussion, Ben Jones winks at his local audience and sings the blues for the wretched, gravely misunderstood confederate flag. And the chorus goes like this: “Don’t assume when you see a rebel flag that it is some divisive display of bigotry.”
Spare me this disingenuous tune. An obviously intelligent and knowledgeable history student, Mr. Jones knows that assumptions aren’t necessary. The rebel flag is the enduring symbol of a tragic attempt by an agrarian ruling class to preserve for its own benefit, at enormous human cost, a failed, morally corrupt network of social and economic institutions.
