Prior to the JV and Varsity contests last Tuesday, Aug. 28 the first ever Junior Panther girls’ team played their first game of the season. Led by 8th graders Lisa Maloney and Daniela Siccardi with nine and six points respectively, the Junior Panthers won their home opener over the Luray 8th grade team 24 to 12.
Thursday, Aug. 30 saw the Page County High School Panthers come to RCHS. The “Valley Panthers” brought a couple of good teams to town for another hot night of basketball in the “Sweatbox.” The Lady Panthers from Page were a tough and talented squad and the game was a fight from start to finish. Falling behind by four in the first quarter, the Rapp side fought tooth and nail to gain the win.
Gwen Johnson led all scorers on the night and played a game to remember, with 24 points and numerous key steals to keep the game close. It was a tough loss as the Varsity side fell to the Page squad 53 to 46. Amanda Weakley added 11 points and senior Jessica Nawrocki had seven rebounds for our Lady Panthers.
After the loss, Dayton said, “It was a disappointing loss, but we played hard. The difference tonight was our missed layups and foul shots. Now we must learn from our mistakes, put this behind us and get ready for Central High School next Tuesday.”
It was more of the same for the junior varsity as they faced the JV Lady Panthers from Page earlier in the evening. Spotting the visiting Page girls a 19 to 0 lead before scoring their first bucket, the Rapp JV played the opposition even up the rest of the game. The final score was Page JV 41 and RCHS JV 20.
Sophomore Laura Maloney led the Rapp girls with eight points on the night. Freshman Anna Kreyling threw in six for the home side.
