to the lower basin, and included interviews with landowners and developers who spoke on the many advantages of employing best management practices in agricultural, urban and suburban settings to minimize pollution of the river by nutrients and sediment.
There were informative presentations on a range of topics including the emerging water policy issues of the Bush Administration, a project to inventory drinking water resources of the Rappahannock Basin and plan for future needs, the ongoing projects of workgroups implement the tributary strategy outlined by the third annual summit, water-resource-based land use planning implemented in Albemarle County, the multistate Chesapeake Bay 2000 Agreement* and efforts to finetune environmental goals based on developments in the scientific understanding of issues involved in the health of the Rappahannock River and the Chesapeake Bay.
Workgroups set up by Summit III in the areas of Public Relations and Outreach, Urban Issues and Agricultural and Forestry Issues also reported on initiatives each group is undertaking to help implement the goals of the Commission.
Underlying the perspectives and themes of every speaker was the vision shared by the many agencies, organizations and individuals working together to insure the economic, recreational and esthetic value of these vital natural resources.
