Poor white southerners, my ancestors among them, suffered along with African Americans, sacrificing blindly for that ignoble cause even when its success would have reinforced their own dire circumstances under an oppressive regime of free labor and racial polarization of working people. Sorry, Ben, but southerners, white and black, have more than ample cause to be offended.

As to the invocation of the Holy Cross as a similarly misused cultural symbol, all I can say is Holy #$©#%%! My grandfather, a white southerner and man of the cloth, is surely turning over in his grave.
