Fall is the time of the year when many birds are busy preparing for the long journey to their winter homes. Migration is the movement of birds from one home to another. Some birds will fly thousands of miles to reach their winter homes.
Some local birds begin the journey to their winter homes before the food supply in our area runs out. Day length and temperature plays a part in triggering the birds’ internal seasonal clocks. Shorter and cooler days also mean that the food supply will soon run out, it is then time to fly south where it is warmer and various food can be found.
Migratory birds usually fall into one of four groups, the first being our permanent residents, these are nonmigrating birds such as Cardinals, Chickadees and Titmice who remain in their home area all year.
