For those of you who missed the meteor showers on Sunday morning, Nov. 18 from 4-6 a.m. it was really a fire works show with 1,000 meteors per hour streaking overhead. Some were bright enough to cast shadows.
This year’s Leonid meteor showers was one of the best in decades. The Leonid showers occur each fall in November when the earth’s orbits takes it through the trail of particles shed by the Comet Tempel-Tuttle as it swings around the sun once every 33 years.
Most of the particles are smaller than a grain of rice. They enter our atmosphere traveling at a rate of 45 miles per second and they burn up in brilliant streaks of light.
The meteors are called Leonids because they appear to come from the direction of the constellation Leo.
The last major Leonid shower occurred in 1966.
