The Bald Eagle is one of the most recognizable of American birds.
Several sightings of this magnificent bird have been reported within the Virginia Piedmont. I had a thrilling opportunity recently to see an adult eagle soaring over my Flint Hill backyard and it was a breathtaking sight. .. An eagle is considered an adult when it gets a white head and tail, which happens when it is near four or five years of age. Its body is‘solid brown and it has a large, curved, yellow bill.
Juveniles have blotchy patches of white on their underside and tail.
Females may weigh up to 14 pounds, nearly half again as, heavy as the average male, with a wingspan reaching eight feet. Eagles tend to be found near rivers and lakes. T^hey can live more than 30 years in the wild and even longer in captivity. , They mate for life, laying two to three eggs yearly and building nests that they may expand year after year, sometimes producing structures 10 f^et in diameter. They often nest within 100 miles of where they hatched. - ■ Eagles from northern
