visibly recovering and biologists concluded in 1988 that eagles were reproducing successfully enough in the wild to discontinue the federal reintroduction program. In 1995. when the bald eagle exceeded 4,500 breeding pairs, it was down listed from endangered to threatened in the lower 48 states.
The bald eagle has now been proposed for removal from the list, but its removal from the list has been postponed due to concerns about whether its habitat would be adequately protected.
The Endangered Species Act, supported by related conservation efforts such as eagle reintroduction and the DDT ban has undoubtedly provided the critical protection, which has enabled the bald eagle to make its remarkable recovery.
Hopefully, these birds will be around for many future generations to admire.
