Jonathan Robinson was pinned by James Webb, and Max Haynes was pinned by Clay Purvear. John Ferdetta (125 wt class) put Rappahannock back on winning ways with a technical fall in the third period over Clay Hill. Mike Foster of Madison then got the decision over Mike Weise of Rappahannock. Then things got real interesting!
RCHS head coach Jim Wells decided to use some strategy in an attempt to upset a team carrying three wrestlers ranked in the top five in the state. It was his choice at the table and he elected to forfeit the 135pound weight class. This meant all his wrestlers would have to wrestle heavier opponents but this was an attempt to give the team a better chance to win.
In the 140-pound weight class Stuart Smith (Madison) jumped out to an early lead and finished 8-3 beating Stuart Hensley of Rappahannock. The switching around gave Bill Tucker a forfeit at 145 and allowed Garner Smythe to go up against a good wrestler in Spence Carter at 152.
Smythe’s experience wasn’t wasted as he got the pin in the third period to put the Panthers up 32-24. The move by coach Wells kept KW Hahn of Madison off of the mats. KW is ranked third in the state ,in some polls, and this would have probably cost the Panthers some key points.
Houston Haynes of Rappahannock was pinned at the 160-pound class. Steven Von Fange at 171 had the luxury of wrestling the fifth ranked .Nicos Georgiades. Steven held on until the second period where the match was stopped by a technical fall. The last match was very exciting because the overall score was RC 32 Madison 35.
The bad news was Curtis Woods (Madison) at 189 is ranked second in the state. Tommy Voorhies gave a gutty performance at the end of the first period with Woods on top 2-1 but 29 seconds into the second period experience got the best of Tommy and in a few moves he was pinned. Madison 41 RCHS 32
