After his stunning victor} at Chancellorsville in earl} May of 1863, General Robert E Lee conceived a bold plan tc take the war for Southern inde pendence to the North. He gathered his forces around Culpeper. By early June these forces were ready to move including 10,000 cavalry troops under the brilliant and flamboyant General JEB Stuarl who were camped on Fleetwood Hill near Brandy Station
On the morning of June 9 however, a northern “recon naissance in force” undei General Alfred Pleasontor crossed the Rappahannocl River in two columns al Brandy and Kelly fords tc reconnoiter Lee’s force, espe dally to determine how man} infantry were bivouackec around Culpeper. His orders included the possibly of engaging the enemy.
