can i name me positions on the team were cheering wildly as the Owls of WCDS took on Bethlehem Baptist of Manassas. Four games, back to back. Normally, four games are a bone-wearying affair.
This night was fun, with all of the teams evenly matched. WCDS’ Middle School Girls played first, losing a hard-fought game. Next up was the Middle-School Boys team, who ran out on the court with such energy that the Bethlehem Baptist team never had a chance.
After winning the game, a small break enabled team members as well as starved parents time to feast on pizza, popcorn, fruit, and chips provided by the Athletic Boosters. Mrs. Priscilla Toth, Mrs. Linda Hammelman, and Mrs. Debbie Beatty worked furiously to keep up with the demand, and they proved up to the challenge.
When the Junior Varsity Boys ran out on the floor, the crowd went crazy. (Amazing what a little food can do for the spirit!) The boys were pumped up, and the game was neck-and-neck throughout the entire four periods. After the inadvertent injury of sophomore Fred Lee of WCDS, the team went slightly off-kilter and trailed several points behind.
The last twenty-two seconds, however, will live in the memories of ‘most everyone there, as the Owls got serious and breezed past their opponents to win the game. When the buzzer sounded, the stands emptied out, as parents, siblings and friends flooded the floor. What a close, wonderful game!
Hearts were still pounding when the Varsity Boys took the floor for the final game of the night. Although it would seem to be almost anti-climactic, the game was very close, and it easily could have gone either way. The WCDS Owls pulled off the third win of the evening, though, sending Bethlehem Baptist back with just one win.
As I mentioned earlier, life at Wakefield isn’t all about sports, but we sure love our kids and want the best for everyone of them.
• On that note, Friday was the American Heart Association’s Annual Jump Rope for Heart. Part fundraiser, part health awareness, Jump Rope for Heart is a fun event for students, teachers, and parents. With healthy snacks and water available, the students competed in several events designed to keep them healthy and aware.
Local Front Royal radio station, WFTR, kept things moving in the afternoon, broadcasting from our gym. All of the students who participated got to enjoy Friday as a Uniform-Free Day, so the mood around school was upbeat even before the events started. Several tables were set up to take blood pressure, hand out brochures, and introduce kids to the DARE program. Thanks go out to all who participated and helped to make the afternoon such a success!
