Every February, cards, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones on St. Valentine's Day all across the country.
The history of Valentine's Day and it’s patron saint is still a mystery. We know that February has long been a month of romance. Even today. St. Valentine's Day is a remnant of a celebration of both Christian and ancient Roman traditions.
According to legend, Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. Emperor Claudius II thought single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, so he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine realized the injustice and continued to perform marriages in secret. When Valentine’s action was discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
While he was in prison, Valentine fell in love with a young girl, who may have been the jailer’s daughter. She visited him during his confinement, and before his death, it is believed he may have sent the first valentine greeting. He wrote her a letter and signed it “From your Valentine”. \Ve still use this today.
He w as a romantic figure and during the “Middle Ages” he w'as one of the most popular saints in England and France.
In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was a time of purification.
The oldest known valentine still in existence was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was in prison in the “Town of London” following his capture at the “Battle of Agincourt”. The greeting was written in 1415, and is part of a collection of the British Library in London, England.
Over one billion valentine cards are sent in this country each year. It is second to Christmas cards. Joyce Hall started selling greeting post cards from two shoe boxes as early as 1910. Today, Hallmark sells cards in more than 100 countries and in 30 languages.
Teachers, children, wives and sweethearts, are at the top of the list and cards are mostly purchased by women.
Men purchase millions of boxes of chocolate candy and bouquets of roses and other flowers for the Feb. 14 holiday.
