As most deaths occur among older indivituals who have one or more disabling conditions, they are often .preceded by an extended period during which family members provide care to the relative. In such cases, death not ony brings an end to the patients’ suffering, but also relieves caregivers of their demanding responsibilities. As a result of being so intimately involved in the day-to-day care of an ailing or terminally ill individual. caregivers are usually better prepared to deal with the final outcome. Research has shown that when death relieves caregivers of the stresses involved with providing care to a loved one, caregivers are bettere able to adapt after the loss than those less acquainted with the deceased's condition.
Feeling relief amidst loss can also make us feel guilty, unless we give ourselves permission to feel the whole range of conflictual feelings that often accompany loss.
