• Lower school Physical Education classes were excited this week as they started roller skating lessons. Mrs. Susan Bell, PE teacher, contacted SkateTime, a company out of Berryville that contracts with schools to help students learn to roller skate. Using specially designed skates that won’t mar the wooden gym floor, students can skate using either “quads” or “inline” skates.
The program, which lasts for two weeks at the school, teaches children safety rules, as well as basic steps. Sounds like fun!
• Stephen Dowell, a junior at WCDS, went to Richmond this past weekend to attend a Virginia Junior Classical League meeting. Stephen is one of the first students in Wakefield’s history to be elected as an officer of the State League. Mr. John McMahon, a teacher of Latin and Greek at WCDS, has worked hard with all of the Latin students. Mr. McMahon spends hours every month, in addition to class hours, Working with the students, preparing them for competitions and events around the state.
• WCDS’ Valentine Dance, sponsored by the Student Government, will be held on Friday, Feb. 15 in the auditorium. According to Student Government vice-president Thomas Marlar, “the enthusiasm of the Prep School students always makes the dances a fun-filled evening.” President Connor Hammelman agreed, although he was quick to point out that decorating for the dances was almost as much fun. Parents who are interested in chaperoning should contact Mrs. Leser at 635-8555.
• Wedding bells will be ringing at the end of this month for two WCDS teachers. Miss Katie Russell and Mr. Matt Baker will soon wed, making the Upper School English Department a “family affair”! Congratulations!
• Plans are underway in the Admissions Office for the upcoming Open House in March. Slated for Sunday, March 24 from 1 to 3 p.m., this event pulls interested families from a wide area. Because the goal of Wakefield Country Day School is small, structured classrooms, families who are interested in enrolling should contact Mrs. Ginny Leser in the Admissions Office at 635-8555 for information and a mailing.
• Students who are heading on either of the Winter Sports Week ski trips are nearly beside themselves with the warm weather that has hung around our areq. No matter, say the students! With tubing, indoor pools, video games, and plenty of food, they’ll have fun in spite of the weather. As a parent, however, who has shelled out many dollars for ski clothes, I want to see snow drifts! Have a good time, guys!
