to celebrate
Of all of our national holidays, the 4th of July is by far the most joyous and carefree. Summertime, vacations, a slower pace — the patriots of 226 years ago showed such good sense in declaring independence during the summer. Our wish this 4th of July, 2002 is for all of us to slow our pace briefly amid the balloons, family picnics, fireworks and the sometimes frantic festivities, and acknowledge the memory of Sept. 11. As we remember that great sadness, we ought to reflect on the myriad reasons for celebrating this day. The 4th of July, 1776 and the 11th of September, 2001 are both part of our history now.
