Ryan Bailey, a senior defensive end from the football team at Bridgewater College also helped, as did Lee Hitt, a Rappahannock County High School graduate and longtime football proponent.
The camp was mostly instructional, as the staff was well aware that there has been no exposure to organized football in the Rappahannock County School system. As such, most of the three days was spent teaching football fundamentals and basic techniques for position play.
The boys were divided into groups that hit the blocking sleds; ran the pass patterns and threw the football. There was line play, backfield instruction, blocking technique and how to deliver and receive a handoff.
Overall it was a big success and the coaches/instructors were pleased with the turnout. As coach Pullin said at the end of camp, “Hopefully, they are not only a little more knowledgeable about the game of football, but they are also excited about coming back at the end of the summer and going out for the team.” One way or another, there will be a great big first on Sept. 11 this fall.
On that Wednesday, at 4 p.m. in the afternoon, the first-ever Rappahannock County High School freshmen team will play the Strasburg High School freshmen team here at home, behind the high school. Try and be there — Let’s Go Rapp!
