Rappahannock County citizens will have the opportunity to hear a report by County Administrator John McCarthy about the current legislative process pertaining to the land application of sewage sludge. This public forum will be held July 15 beginning at 7:30 p.m., at the County Library. The Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection (RLEP) is sponsoring the event as a public service.
Citizens will recall that in November 2001, the Planning Commission approved and forwarded to the Board of Supervisors the draft of the County's "Ordinance Providing for Monitoring the Storage and Land Application of Sewage Sludge". As reported by the Rappahannock News, "months of work" went into the preparation of the document. Through several public hearings and public comment periods at Supervisor and Planning Commission meetings, many citizens, and RLEP, expressed comments supporting the most restrictive ordinance possible under existing state law.
