senator William boiling (District 4) is chairman of the "Commission on the Future of Virginia's Environment" (Bolling Commission) which is gathering information from all parties to the issue of land application of sewage sludge. The First session was held May 28 and the second on June 18. Additional sessions are scheduled Sept. 11, Oct. 15, and Nov. 7 at Richmond. Mr. McCarthy testified before the Commission at the second session relating, for the record, Rappahannock County's official position on the sludge issue which he will discuss at the public forum. A copy of Mr. McCarthy s testimony is filed at the Administrator's Office.
During the past several months, county citizens have written letters to the Rappahannock News expressing opinions and comments about sludge use in the county. The statements ranged from "ban sludge" to relating negative effects of the material on animals.
One citizen wrote about being in direct contact with a sludge operation which caused her serious health problems. She moved to Rappahannock County, where sludge has not been used, in order to begin recovery ( Letters, Rappahannock News, Jan. 2, 02). No comments advocating using sludge in the county are in the public record.
