This is a great country, but America didn t just happen that way. It grew into its greatness with care and nurturing, tolerance and compromise, with patience and some stubbornness. And with some wounds.
These are all qualities found in the good people who serve our nation in all kinds of ways, not the least of which is the essential task of simply being a good citizen. To love this country is to teach our children well, to vote always, and to speak of what we believe while listening hard to our neighbor.
It is fitting to celebrate the birth of our nation; it is more fitting to celebrate its future which is in our hands.
