A jubilant Larry Sherertz, upon hearing he won the hotly-contested Rappahannock County Sheriffs race Tuesday evening said, "Thank you Rappahannock!" amidst cheers and hugs from some 100 supporters waiting for election results at Griffin Tavern in Flint Hill.
Across the county over in Boston, it was a different story. There, at Robert Thornhill's home, Sheriff challenger Steve Butler, was waiting with 35 supporters, family and friends to hear the results.
"Obviously, I am disappointed," said Butler when asked his reaction to the results. "I feel we did the best we could. We wish our best to the winner and hope he continues to serve the people well.
"And we extend our warmest heartfelt thanks to all the people in the county," said the former uniformed officer of the U. S. Secret Service.
Butler, 59, who challenged incumbent Sheriff Sherertz, received a total of 1,130
96.9%
