The beginning of the final week of district competition and for many the most exciting week of the season for the Rappahannock County High School volleyball teams was Oct. 27.
The JV team completed its regular season with an 11-5 overall, and 6-4 district, record. They finished the season in second place to earn a spot in the JV championship to be held Nov. 8. The varsity squad also experienced much success earning three wins to finish the season with a 19-1 overall record, 10-0 in the Bull Run district.
RCHS clinched the regular season title and by doing so also earned a berth in the Region B tournament and the right to host the district tournament.
The week began at home on Monday the 27th when Rappahannock hosted a match against George Mason. The JV squads took the court first. George Mason had defeated the young Panthers earlier in the season and came to RCHS with a 4-3 record, tied for second with the Rappahannock. The Panthers jumped ahead quickly, outscoring George Mason 17-5 after two rotations. RCHS exhibited strong serving only missing one serve and accumulating nine aces in the first game alone. The Panthers won the first feame 25-11. In the second game, Rappahannock once again started off strongly, outscoring George Mason 10-1 after two rotations; however, the Mustangs did not give up easily. Determined to leave Rappahannock still in second place, Mason often tried to rally but with aggressive net play from the Panthers, GMHS fell short. Rappahannock won the second game 25-20 to win the match and gain sole possession of number two in the Bull Run District.
Highlights of the night included six kills from Samantha Brown, two from Noel Johns, and one each from Rebecca Tupper, Nicole Brown, and Aurelia Malek. Samantha also had two blocks and Nicole one. The Panthers
