votes or 43 percent but it wasn't enough to overcome Sherertz who captured 1,512 votes or 57 percent.
Sherertz won in all the districts except Scrabble where he and Butler tied, each with 274 votes.
Some 2,707 persons voted in this election or 54 percent of the 5,025 registered voters in the county, according to Registrar Nancy Newlin.
"This was probably the smoothest election I've ever done," said Newlin who has been registrar for the past 14 years.
Sherertz, 55, who has been sheriff for the past five years, ran on a theme: "Continue the Excellence." His campaign literature stressed how the county has "the lowest crime rate" which brought forth critics who disputed that statement.
The other contested races in the county were for two Board of Supervisors' seats and three School Board seats.
