versy, didn’t generate such heat. The supervisors took up two requests from Sprint which won board approval two years ago to build a system of seven towers to pro-" vide wireless communications in part of the county.
Sprint officials came to the meeting to ask the county to modify its permit to build an 80-foot-tall monopole tower along Route 522 south of Flint Hill. Responding to objections from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources that the tower could have an adverse affect on historic properties nearby, Sprint asked permission to change the tower design to a “monopine”—essentially, a fake pine tree 80 feet tall—to “lessen its visual presence” on the wooded site.
The only public comment oh the design change came from attorney Bill Dobrovir of Sperryville, representing the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection and the Rappahannock County Conservation Alliance, who said those two local groups supported Sprint’s request for the monopine tower. The board quickly approved the change.
