Alternating between classroom presentation and roll-upyour-sleeves-work on the tractor, the workshop provided participants with both practical and conceptual knowledge about alternative fuels.
Topics covered included fuel-producing crops and yields; how to modify a diesel engine to run on SVO; how to make biodiesel fuel (which runs in unmodified diesel engines); the politics of petroleum and lifecycle analysis.
Lifecycle analysis, or LCA, helps assess the ratio of energy used in fuel production to energy produced, as well as other environmental costs and benefits.
For example, in biodiesel/SVO production, a gallon of fuel invested yields (on average) 3.2 gallons produced. In petroleum-based fuel production and distribution, one gallon of fuel invested yields an average of .83 gallons returned (that’s right, folks—less than 1:1. It costs us more than a gallon of gas to make a gallon of gas, not counting political costs).
