uptake of water to replace the lost moisture. Desiccation becomes worse in windy conditions, mild sunny days, and in plants near homes with white siding where the sunlight is reflected. Needles or leaves look discolored around the edges or in bad cases, the entire leaf may brown.
Desiccation has been known to kill out sections of a shrub or tree, but usually new growth will replace what has been damaged. Watering can help reduce the negative effects of desiccation. Give evergreens a good soak in early December before the ground freezes and water during warm spells throughout winter. A two-inch layer of mulch over the rooting area may also reduce the water loss as well as manage the soil temperature.
