Lord Jesus Christ is really present and active in the liturgy. The liturgy is replete with spiritual realities— love, selfgiving, forgiveness, to name only a few. Though unseen, they are real. We long to see these realities. We are made, body and soul. Our bodies “cover” our souls. Likewise, spiritual realities are clothed within the liturgy as signs and symbols we can see.

It is unfortunate that any sense of reverence, with its corresponding deference and restraint, were absent from Mr. O’Connell’s distasteful charade.
