“Woody the Woodpecker” is alive and well here in Rappahannock.
Bird sightings
Observations from the county: Mary Dobovir sent a report on a Red-headed woodpecker at her feeder. She mentioned that it has been over 25 years since she has seen one. Andy Platt saw a Fox Sparrow that has migrated early from the north; Donn Jones of Amissville checked in with the pesky House Sparrow, Barred Owl, Chimney Swift and Rusty Blackbird. And although quite a few observations have been made on the Bald Eagle here in the county, we were blessed to have a Bald Eagle visit us Thanksgiving morning; the 14 of us who had gathered witnessed this huge bird take his morning bath on the edge of our pond.
Our tally of all bird species seen in Rappahannock for the year 2004 to date is 132. This list will be made available upon request via my e-mail. For those of you not on the Internet, please call and I will mail you a final tally.
Final article
This is my final article on the Birds of Rappahannock and completes a year’s accounting of the birds seen and heard in our county.
