Rabbit damage can be avoided by placing a guard around the tree’s trunk, but make sure to remove it in the springtime. There are also commercial repellents that can be painted on the trunk. Mice chew bark at the ground level and can cause trees severe damage or death.
Check the base of trees regularly for signs of mice and keep the mulch pulled away from the trunk.
Road salt
The accumulation of a season’s salt can also damage certain landscape plants. White pines, red and sugar maples, and black walnuts are very sensitive to salt levels. Take care not to pile snow around trees and shrubs and regularly wash off plants that continuously get sprayed by the salt trucks.
