Rappahannock County Farmland

Preservation Program Invitation for

Applications

“A Tool for preserving and enhancing the

agricultural industry.”

Agriculture is the leading industry in Rappahannock County. A critical mass of farmland is necessary for the continued vitality of the economic engine of production agriculture. Farmland owners interested in preserving their farm and natural character of their property may be eligible to have development rights purchased by the County. The Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors formally established the Farmland Preservation (FP) Program, a voluntary program that pays landowners to protect the farmland and natural resource assets of their property. The FP Program allows landowners to enter into agreements to sell the development potential of qualifying property to the County while maintaining the right to continue to own and use the property. The purpose of the FP Program will be to protect farmland and retain the agricultural industry’s critical mass; in particular, farm parcels that are economically viable operations.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applications for the Farmland Preservation

Program will be evaluated on a point system,

wherein points are awarded on the basis of such

attributes as:

1. Natural, cultural and scenic resources; 2. Threat of conversion to developed use; 3. Open space resources; and/or 4. Opportunity of County funds leveraging other funds

Price paid will be negotiated between the County and the property owner and will be determined per development right unit based on gross by-right allotment per County Zoning & Subdivision regulations.

For an application, please contact the Rappahannock County Administration Office at 290 Gay Street, Washington, Virginia 22747, (540) 675-5330. All FP applications are due by December 30.2004
