Tracing our roots
The Society was formed in December of 1964 when a group of over 50 citizens met at the courthouse after a small gathering of interested people had met at Avon Hall, the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Carrigan. This meeting, chaired by Judge Raynor V. Snead, subsequently elected Mr. E. M. (Ned) Jones as the first president.
In July 1965, Mrs. George Davis was authorized to purchase the first research items: a book on the first Baptist churches and a first Baptist church register. She also photo copied the Quit Rent Roll for Culpeper County dated 1771. (Rappahannock County was a part of Culpeper County until 1833.) At this same meeting Mr. George Davis gave the Society its first Hotchkiss maps. These maps are still today our best selling authenticated maps.
