The inspiration for these workshops is clearly evident as Portman explained, “I have always felt that our life stories are one of the most powerful reminders of the gift of life that we share. Every single person, regardless of their age or background or belief system, has a unique story to tell and the need for their story to be heard. That’s why I teach “Life Stories Workshops.”
Portman emphasized that she is “inspired by the gift of creativity that every single person has and expresses when they write or tell their stories.” This inspiration is rekindled year after year in the creative stories told in the workshops Portman leads, as well as in the stories growing out of the workshops that are later adapted to vignettes in plays at the Ki Theatre — such as “No Ordinary Person” or “Stories Run Through Us.”
Stories are everywhere for inspiration and learning. Portman remembers vividly the 9/11 tragedy and reading the hundreds of thumbnail obituaries that were published in the New York Times. She recalled that these “stories” set a new standard for such reports by focusing not on career achievements but on memories that are more personal.
