As delegates expedited the food tax cut, House Republican leaders also vowed to reduce another levy: the personal property tax on privately owned vehicles.
In 1998, the General Assembly had planned to eventually phase out the car tax. But during last year’s legislative session, the Assembly froze the phasing-out process because of the soaring cost of reimbursing localities for the lost revenue.
Now that the state has a budget surplus of more than $1 billion, GOP leaders in the House unveiled legislation to resume and finish phasing out the car tax.
Callahan said legislators should honor the “commitment” they made to tax relief during the gubernatorial term of Republican Jim Gilmore, who campaigned on the slogan “No Car Tax.”
