Moving with
the currents
This year has started as most new beginnings should. Already there have been significant world changes. There have been elections in Iraq. There has been help for devastated tsunami victims. A president has been re-elected and there has been a host of cabinet changes. Here in Virginia our general assembly is tackling tough issues like transportation, taxes, education and health. Social security is looming as a not so safe savings plan. Or is it just hipe to help out private companies and lure vulnerable investors. One thing is for sure. Many baby boomers are relying on social security to provide a comfortable nest or a fresh start. Clevenger’s Corner was approved and easements in Rappahannock County are at an all-time high. The Rappahannock News has a new editor and the previous editor is pursuing a new journalistic path with another paper in Northern Virginia. Change. Hopefully, we’re all changing but we do so at different rates and we view change in different ways. While we can’t always control what happens to us or around us, we can control how we react to it. My Symphony of Life To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion. To be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This will be my Symphony. —William Henry Channing
